Your observations in the last paragraph reflects the actual situation. It's pointless to discuss logic to somebody who don't (want to) reason. As a result, I found C.K. Hung's way of dealing with 50-cent (五毛) commenators cost-effective. Basically, that's similar to dealing with trolls. He deletes all direct replies to 50-cent comments regardless of their quality because those 50-cent comments draw our energy away. However, one can comment on those 50-cent comments in a 3rd person speech.

My approach has been: if a thread is not interesting, reply once, then unsubscribe.

If same user keeps generating further notifications, temporary block.

If the thread is abusive, block user with standard block reply, leave thread as proof / reminder of why block.
