this is amazing ^

States selected for initial attempt:

  • Virginia (Fellowship): Danny Avula has offered to make the warm intro/ask, meeting w/ him in person 12/8
  • Mass (Fellowship): waiting on Brigades member for warm intro there
  • Texas: (population): have not identified any warm leads. will continue to try x 1 week, then go for the FOIA
  • New York (population): Have not identified any warm leads at state level only city. Will continue trying x 10 days, we know so many people there feels awkward to jump to FOIA.

Brendan will pursue Alaska data simultaneously.

Jake spoke w/ Socrata this week about asking all of their customers to share data, will loop Rebecca into follow up.

Virginia update:
Discussed w/ Danny Avula in person today. Will introduce us to his colleagues at TANF, is very supportive of the project.

I've also forwarded below a bit of proof that California has not only released the

Looks like # TANF recipients per state (and per capita I think) varies a LOT. Worth scoping the potential impact per state before putting in much work to get the data. In 2009 there were ~4M TANF recipients in the US and >1M of them were in CA. NY is second largest was ~250k. Here’s the ’09 data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Pi62wo_5T4c2LCZFpwrbjZp5kVFrYSaHQTHqLZQ0U5Q/edit#gid=0 (source: https://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/cats/social_insurance_human_services/supplemental_security_income_temporary_assistance_to_needy_families.html)

Regardless of scale there still seems to be a pretty big opp to improve this:

Agreed. NY was #1 for that reason, others more so due to relationship like
Danny.

Realizing though my personal blocker is more along lines of us not being
very rigorous about how we decided this is best use of time for EBTNearMe.
Have we really figured out how to use it in CA well? Are we ready to
support and spread in another state? Why spread this vs other data types
first in CA?

Not arguing so much as ensuring we ask + document those questions.
