Its one action amongst many, that have added up to doing a lot. But the amount of trolls I've seen here that show the importance of doing this have probably killed it off now...
But that would have ended any unity, any momentum and pressure to end this invasion and stop potential escalation into an even bigger war. The change is already starting to show but what doesn't help is bickering and insulting. |

@pavlus I think this is spot on. Cut github access to some people, and tell them why, and they will be a little more involved. Some of them will spill over from inaction to action. Some of them will make a difference. After reading some of the comments here, I am actually convinced that cutting gthub access to russian IPs might end up as a net-positive in the long-term, even for Russians. What's the worse that can happen if we cut access? |

It's a very bad idea, and GitHub are smarter than that (not that I speak for them). Geo-blocking a whole country makes it harder for those young Russians that are already communicating with the rest of the world on a regular basis, and most likely to have a more globalist view and not being Putin supporters. It would also hurt the community, and the trust of the repository maintainers (who might migrate from GitHub). It makes no sense to lock out contributors from your repository. How would that help Ukraine? To the degree that the economic sanctions of blocking access to consume free software would theoretically make sense, it just wouldn't work. The business-critical software uses software repositories such as npm. And those have mirrors, so they can't even geo-restrict. And of course no one can shut down VPNs. |

This could be the case, in which case it's a legal concern and our votes here won't matter. In fact I just found that another repository I contributed to were blocked due to Sanctions because the author/owner lives in Crimea, but only his private repos: tkashkin/GameHub#289 I think that's a reasonable approach (but carried out poorly here) to target the economy more specifically, but of course, they can just switch to another hosting solution as git is fundamentally designed to be decentralized, so none of this will have any lasting impact on the Russian economy. |

I don't think resources like GitHub should be used in this war. Russians are not to blame for the fact that this war began. Russians against the war. Putin seized power in our country and all responsibility for war crimes should lie with the Russian government and the military. I am an open source developer from Russia and run a non-commercial open source project that helps in search and rescue operations. The project is applied all over the world. |

Yet this thread has been started by a Polish guy, supported by a bunch of other Polish commenters, and generally scrolling through the comments I find much more people from Poland than from Russia or Ukraine, which makes me ponder: is Russia attacking Poland right now? Or is it some innate fear of Russia in Poland?) Luckily, It seems that most other opinions are along the lines of "the government's policy should not affect civilians", since the political instruments and sanctions are by definition taken towards governments. Another thing to note here is that if you block all Russians from GitHub, you'll lose many contributions made by programmers from Russia that use GitHub. You can relatively easily replace some Web/PHP guys but if we consider something like low-level hardware/ atomic operations/ memory models and ordering, there ain't that many experts out there... I personally know of many Russians working for Intel's intrinsic/vectorization libraries, people who actively participate in Linux kernel development e.t.c. Think about the harm to OpenSource community, not about your personal opinions or ambitions. What you are proposing thus is just another flavour of racial/national segregation, and I hope we all remember that it is definitely a big NO-NO. P.S.

It's not just 58k registered users that would be affected. It's all about all users cloning repoisitories ten or maybe hundred of thousands times a day. Also, there is also 33,032 github users from Ukraine. Nobody knows how many of them will die or lose their homes, their workplace. They too contribute to free software movement. We ought to do something for them. |

also reminder that this isn't something like an economic sanction, where it affects majority of the civilians to a point where they are forced to revolt against their leaders to reconsider their actions, this is a fairly niche platform, and definitely not something your average civilian would be using. Cutting off Russians from github would achieve absolutely nothing other than causing more harm to the free software community. |

Github shouldn't restrict Russian users. Informing is better than restricting. I think instead it would be much better if Github put up a message of support for Ukraine and inform users about the ongoing situation. This way any Russian users who have only watched state media until now (which claims things like zero Russian casualties, and it only being a limited Donbas operation) will hopefully have a better understanding of the truth. |

It's just a one more sanction among the other ones (Netflix, GooglePay, ApplePay, Visa, MasterCard, Pornhub, ...{long list}). Honestly, I don't really think that this is going to happen. But I believe that isolating Russia territory (not people, as you always can change the county of occupation) from Maven, Npm, DockerHub, Atlassian services and number of other engineering tools is going to change your mind and make you more proactive. |

Hello again. That's why our government has all this rhetoric about how bad IT people are. Because we're doing 0 value for them. And that's probably true. IT is a special class or caste of our society, clearly separated from most of the population. You may think of it as a different country, actually. We have little in common with fellow citizen's problems (we're not "better" - but just totally culturally different), we have no business between us, etc Say, that's why you can see Putin's approval rates for the population in general around 60%, and for IT segment it's almost 0. So, trying to push IT people, one and only one segment that you will hit - these IT people only. The current government will even applause you for that. |

I'm not going to take part in a useless Internet flame over the huge tragedy of two nations with a significant percentage of people who have relatives on both sides. Honestly, compared to that vast tragedy, to its consequenses to common people and to the sanctions, to the internal quarrel we, russians, are having between wise citizens and brainwashed ones... that proposition of banning Github is sad but looks really small and unimportant. I just want to ask those who think it's a good idea: have you ever in your life stood up against a prepared police troop? Have you opposed those in a riot once in your life somewhere where any court would send you to prison for 2-3 years if there's a need? I know a few people who did and... that wasn't enough still. |

@MasterAler Sure, but this isn't unprecedented during a time of crisis that people around the world are concerned about & not as insane as people seem to think it is (Based off of all the responses in this thread, as limited of a sample as that is) Others may call it virtue signaling that achieves nothing, but to disregard it as one drop when it's a part of a downpour of action seems unfair. I simply wish to offer an alternative perspective, I have respect for a great many number of people in both countries but this shouldn't be something that's considered aimed at them. All of the pressure & all of the response from Orgs & influencers is to take a united stance. Not a fractured one as this whole page has been full of. Maybe it'll need a specific implementation and obviously temporary but again... This really does add up given the existing sanctions. I am disappointed by some of the hatred I've seen against the Russian Civilians that protest against invasion & showed support for Ukrainian people, they aren't the one's that this is against it also deters any unity or meaningful resolution People say donate, we have been. People say help in other ways, yet that's already being tried too. I'm just trying to encourage people to consider the potential benefits, even if they disagree. Intel & AMD have taken action, then Microsoft which owns GitHub, Discussion is important aswell as unity rather than dismissing out of hand as foolish. 🤞🏼 |

Unless directly requested by the US government, tt would be highly non-professional to ban GitHub accounts based on nationality of their owners. This is basically the same as if baker will sale its bread to the good people and reject to sale its bread to the bad people. The baker's job is to make bread, not to judge people. The person who can't distinguish its own job from other's job cannot be considered as professional worker. |

If Russia were the way it is shown in other countries, the world would have been plunged into darkness long ago and I would not be calling on my colleagues from other countries to hear me now. If Russia wanted to destroy the fraternal people, there would already be a Russian flag in Kiev. I want to live in a world where there is no war, I want to write high-quality code and make other people's lives better, and not spend days flipping through the tape waiting for the conflict to be resolved. But for this, my country and I need to be heard. And I will not claim that we are right in everything we do. We're wrong, and maybe we're wrong now, too. But history and the international court of Justice will be able to condemn us. But I am sure that even without a trial, Russia will help Ukraine recover from the conflict, as it is helping refugees now. But is this a reason to hate us and judge us without investigation now? Is this a reason to expel Russian engineers from the global IT community, despite what they have done? |
