This update makes the Cover Flow UI in the iOS app work better on all screen sizes and orientations, especially on iOS 14.5 and 15.1 or later. For the iOS and macOS app, the placeholder image shown while movie posters are downloading has been redesigned to match the new app icon. And finally, this version enables telemetry in the macOS app.

These versions were released on the App Store on February 21st, 2022.

I also took the opportunity to add a new Privacy page to the website and link to it from the App Store page.

Mac App Alpha 1.0 (2) Pre-release
Pre-release

This is the first working version of the Mac app that can list and play trailers. macOS 12.0 required, 12.1 or later recommended!

The previous build had a typo that caused a crash, especially on first launch. 🤦‍♂️

This update fixes two issues. The list of movie posters now works properly on iOS 15, and the UI sounds don't pause any playing background media anymore.

This update adds subtle sounds to certain features in the app, for example the Watch Trailer button.
These sounds will not play while your device is in Silent Mode.

If you'd like to disable the audio feedback, tap Settings and then turn off Interaction Sounds.

This update adds a few minor features:

  • the widget configuration allows you to hide all text
  • in-app Settings gains an Update Trailers button to re-download the data, and indicates when the data was last updated
  • a screensaver activates on the AirPlay TV after five minutes, or when no movie is selected (drag the list so it stops between two posters)

And of course, there are some bug fixes:

  • iPad pointer now highlights the Play button as expected
  • tapping a widget will show the correct movie in the app after the trailer finishes playing

This update fixes a regression in the Widget that caused it to crash and appear all black on the home screen. Additionally, a delay is introduced when the app cold starts and shows a trailer because the user tapped a widget. Finally, a new Telemetry signal is added that tells me when a widget was tapped.

This update adds basic analytics to the app by way of Telemetry. Telemetry is a privacy preserving analytics framework. It works by adding the TelemetryClient to your app, and then sending signals whenever an action occurs that you want to track (again, not in a creepy way).

In Theatricals, the following events trigger a Telemetry signal to be sent:

  • The app is launched (we send platform information, including but not limited to the software version and device used)
  • A trailer finishes playing (we send the movie title, trailer identifier, number of trailers watched and platform information)
  • A Theatricals widget updates (we send the movie title, trailer identifier, widget configuration and platform information)

This updated state of the project was submitted to the App Store and passed review. It is shown as version 1.1 in the App Store.

It is a bugfix update that resolves some inconsistencies between the trailers shown in the app and shown in the widget.
