Edegal is a web picture gallery written in Python 3 and TypeScript and designed with performance and scalability in mind.
This is the "version 2" reboot of the Edegal project. It incorporates the following changes to "version 1":
- MongoDB is dead, long live PostgreSQL (and Redis)
- Replace the Node.js backend with Python 3.8 and Django 3.0
- Rewrite frontend in TypeScript instead of CoffeeScript or ECMAScript 6
High performance is achieved through the usage of a dead simple REST JSON API in which most cache misses only result in two database queries.

There is a single unified Docker Compose development environment for both the Django backend and the TypeScript/React frontend. Start the development environment with
docker-compose up
Backend will start at http://localhost:8000 and frontend dev server will start at http://localhost:3000. Usually you will want to open the latter in your browser. A superuser will be created with username mahti
and password mahti
.
To run tests:

- Due to deep magic performed by the
react-scripts
proxy, picture & album downloads do not work in local dev and you are offeredindex.html
instead.

If you need not touch the backend, you can also develop against the Conikuvat.fi backend. This is the default for local non-Docker development in the frontend.

Rules of thumb for rolling your own deployment:
- Everyhing should be served from one hostname for now. Separate media host/CDN is currently not a priority but can be considered if the need arises.
- Only
/api
and/admin
prefixes should be proxied to the backend. Everything else should be served from static files. - Static files directories should be served by

The following services are required:
- ingress-nginx or some other ingress controller
- cert-manager if you want TLS (not required for local development)
The Kubernetes deployment uses Emskaffolden which in turn wraps Skaffold with Emrichen.
To deploy in Docker Desktop or similar local Kubernetes:

To customize, first see kubernetes/default.vars.yaml
and make a copy of kubernetes/staging.vars.yaml
under your environment name (eg. kubernetes/myenv.vars.yaml
). Then activate your environment with -E myenv
. For a non-local Kubernetes cluster, you also need to add your private registry using --default-repo
. Eg.
emskaffolden run -E myenv -- --default-repo=harbor.con2.fi/con2
