Note that avoid-version is only recognized by recent releases of Opam. In a context where the package files are flagged with opam-version: "2.0", this means that avoid-version primarily acts as documentation rather than a way to prevent users from inadvertently install it. If the bug is as "critical" as the title of the pull request implies, I suggest to simply remove all the package files.
