Hello there!
I enjoyed reading your article but I found that you were writing much a code more complicated than you could. So I decided to help and show that rust can be much less verbose than you think.
Here is a PR that shows some of possibilities. I didn't spend much time on it so further enhancements are possible, but I think I won't push that hard and this amount of changes is enough to illustrate the main idea.
