Incorrect result from Directory.existsSync()

Directory.existsSync() reports false even when the directory does exist:

Directory dir = ...
if (!dir.existsSync()) {
  try {
    dir.createSync(); // throws DirectoryIOException
  } catch (DirectoryIOException e) {
    print("$dir does exists");
  }
}

I have not been able to reproduce this. Johnni tells me that this happens in the context of a larger application. Closing for now while Johnni investigates further.
