Notes on Wikidata

Wikidata is an online knowledgebase whose content can be used by anyone under the appropriate license. Its content is used mainly by other Wikimedia projects.

Structure

On Wikidata, every concept is represented as an entry, linked to other concepts related to it, along with a list of its attributes. The representation consists of a unique identifier, "statements", and "properties", which map all the available information related to the entry.

Example

This is the Wikidata page for James Bond, the fictional character, with the unique identifier of Q2009573. JamesBondWikidata
The page notes down aliases such as "007" and "Agent 007" and features an image of the character. The entry goes on to define certain features of this character such as:

  • name
  • gender
  • citizenship
  • occupation
  • spouse
  • creator

And so forth, with each one linked to their own pages. The page also categorizes Bond as an instance of a:

  • fictional human
  • literary character
  • character from James Bond series
