Hi everyone,

My name is Esaul, and I'm looking to become a better developer. I previously worked in the blockchain space. I will definitely spend the first few days or weeks learning the codebase and building (or buying) a machine to run it.

Question: I think I came across one or two forks of this repo. Is this the most active one?

Hi Esaul, welcome! Yes — deeplethe/forkd is the upstream repo (the others you've seen are forks of it), and all development, releases, and issues happen here.

On hardware: forkd needs a Linux host with KVM (Linux ≥ 5.7, vm.unprivileged_userfaultfd=1). Bare metal is ideal; a cloud VM with nested virtualization works too. You don't need anything big to start — a few cores and 16 GB RAM is plenty for the quickstart. Our benchmarks ran on an i7-12700 / 30 GiB box.

Good starting points: the README quickstart, then docs/design/ for how BRANCH/snapshots work. Issues labeled good first issue are a nice entry. Feel free to ask here anytime!

Thanks, that's really helpful! I'll work on setting up that box.

I noticed there aren't any open good first issue items right now, but looks like #3 might be the best candidate out of all the issues available.
