The “local spread” module simulates a contiguous spread of a species, and represents the average spread rate that the population boundary advances by. Although dispersal processes rarely lead to just a contiguous patch of one species, we feel this abstraction is appropriate for modelling the spread of the species occurrence.

This module also allows for stochastic dispersal, which is useful when the average spread rate is less than the resolution of the simulation.
