My case seems distinct enough from the others that I'm submitting it as a new issue.

  • I had CAT installed without problems before the OS update. That said, I had misplaced the Bluetooth dongle and had just decided to turn off Bluetooth altogether.
  • Both wifi and Bluetooth are indicated as unavailable. Uninstalling CAT doesn't fix either. I'm unable to reinstall CAT because it fails to see the wifi card either.
  • It also doesn't see the Bluetooth dongle, which I actually found since this whole issue started, and have tried to plug in to see if it would change anything.
  • I've also tried starting up on another partition, which is running 10.0.1, as well as both partitions' corresponding restore partitions. No dice.
  • A complicating factor is that I applied the upgrade just before shutting down the MacBook and opening it up to reapply thermal paste. When I put the computer back together and booted it up, is when the wifi problem first appeared. At first I assumed that the cause was hardware, so I opened up the computer again and checked everything. The only reason I even considered alternative explanations, eventually remembering CAT, is because I truly couldn't see or imagine how anything I did could have physically affected wifi.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!

Maybe a stupid question, but have you tried resetting the NVRAM https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204063 https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204063

and also the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201295 https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201295 ?

@frizby66 Yes, on both. (And if that's a stupid question then I am too stupid to recognize it. ;) )

I would suggest one of two causes:-

  1. CAT has been applied twice and as such the original fires have been over written with files that were already patched. If this happens, then uninstalling may simply overwrite the most recently patched files with older patched files.

  2. You may have a hardware failure on the wifi card or the antenna connections have came off (I know from experience they are not very secure). You could try sitting the MBP next to the wifi router and see if you get a signal?

I can check the second option when I get home from work tonight. I have my
MBP with me though so I wonder if there's anything I can do in the
meantime to test possibility #1.

Look for a folder called KextsBackupBeforePatch and then one called KextsBackupAfterPatch and compare the file sizes and date stamps inside (do a search in finder).

They are exactly the sam as mine, so links like its not the backup files that are the problem. Did you check the hardware inside?

If you mean opening up the MBP, not since opening this thread… but before posting, I did make what felt like a reasonably thorough hardware inspection, for someone who is no expert on the hardware. As for the second possibility you mentioned, I have to confess I didn't really follow what you were suggesting as a test, but hoped that the drivers would be the issue.

Before I ask for clarification on that though I should mention a couple other things I've tried. One is booting up on an external HD that ran an old OS X - 10.6 or 10.7 I think. Same issue. I'm now in the process of trying to use an external USB wifi dongle but that's opened up a whole new can of driver frustrations.

So that leads me back here, to admit my ignorance about option #2. Specifically, I'm not sure what you mean by looking for a signal if I put the computer closer to the router. If the wifi is inactive to begin with, it's not that it's not picking up a signal - all indications are that it's not even looking for one…

Hi,
If you MBP can not see the wife card and you are running the same ktext versions as the original (after doing the uninstall of CAT) then it could be that the WIFI card has failed or it is not connected properly.

Have a look at this site and select your MBP. You may find a instructions on how to change your wifi/BT board and so you can check the connections.
