Add NULL checks to memory allocation functions #1

strdup(), malloc(), realloc(), etc. may return NULL. Hence, the caller
should handle it to prevent NULL pointer exceptions.

This bug was discovered and resolved using Coverity Static Analysis
Security Testing (SAST) by Synopsys, Inc.
