Zoom, Slack, Instagram support specifying users' pronouns. Should Comingle and/or Coauthor (edemaine/coauthor#582) have a similar feature? I'm mainly unsure whether this belongs in Coauthor or Comingle or both. Feedback welcome!

  • I've already seen people write their pronouns in parentheses on Comingle. So there's probably some demand on Comingle.
  • Pronouns seem somewhat more useful when writing than when speaking, which would suggest it'd be useful in Coauthor.
  • In Coauthor, it'd be natural to put it in the UserLink popup.
  • In Comingle, it could be a parenthetical or a popup.

I added a pronouns setting under Settings (note: a different place than name setting, related to #96), which is displayed in

  • the new user dropdown accessible within the room
  • Jitsi/Zoom calls (as part of the name)

This prevents clutter in the main room-list interface but still makes it pretty easy to see the pronouns of people you're currently meeting with. Comments welcome!

I added pronouns in two more locations:

  • In the "n users" popup that lists users in a room
  • In the room list, for rooms you're currently in. So still avoids clutter with lots of other rooms, but makes it easy to see the pronouns for the people you're talking to.
