Rather than attempting to convert LaTeX to HTML by parsing the language exactly (a serious endeavor, and already underway by another group), this auto-convert tool uses heuristics and regular expressions to convert common LaTeX patterns to their HTML equivalent. Some human effort is still required to fix up the document --- this is meant to provide a solid foundation.
