blue/black screen windows in examples

When running the examples timer.py, dialog.py, and progress_dialog.py (found in https://github.com/enthought/pyface/tree/master/examples ) on wx the GUI windows are blued or blacked out.

running timer.py on both qt and wx yields:

Effectively the same thing occurs for dialog.py

When running progress_dialog.py on qt I see:

Very strange, on my actual screen the progress popup window appears black, but when I take a screenshot, the screenshot shows the window? This is a screen recording that shows what I see:
