Code already exists for limiting the number of creators/editors shown in a citation if this gets too great but is not yet integrated into the 3.4 core codebase.

Having a user-defined render function rather than core code for this is not ideal but deeper integration would be liable to have side effects. May conisder closer integration further out from a release if there is interest,
