This actually isn't the case- both work. The key simply isn't bound until you have enabled the notes layer, at which point it will be honored.

          Fix #520 by referencing the notes shortcut key in the core.yaml file.

Fixed in 3663d55c1. We had hard-coded the key to '4' but it really should be 'N', derived from the shortcut defined in core.yaml.
