In previous version I could simply enter edit mode, make bevel, and click Face Normal Influence.
In 2.8 I need to first set the mesh smooth shading. :(

The reason is that Y.A.V.N.E., as of version 1.9.0, preserves flat shaded faces in addition the the previous behavior that required the use of sharp edges in order to create shading discontinuities. That being said, I agree with you. It can be a little annoying/frustrating.
