DataCap Renewals: Guidance for Allocators in 2026
Over the past 20 months, the Filecoin Plus (Fil+) program has continued to evolve, with Fil+ allocators playing a critical role in helping distribute DataCap to clients storing their data on Filecoin. The Fil+ governance team periodically reviews allocator activity to ensure compliance and high standards. The process is standardized: it begins with a self-review conducted by the allocator, followed by community member verification, and concludes with final checks by the governance team.
In this post, we’ll outline what differentiates a quick, straightforward audit from ones that take much longer and delay DataCap refreshes–– something both parties want to avoid. Our goal is for allocators to have a clear understanding of what to do to ensure audits run smoothly.
What Helps Support a Smooth Renewal
Verify Storage Provider Performance
When clients request allocations, allocators should review the Storage Providers (SPs) they plan to use. If those SPs already have a track record of successful storage and retrievability for public datasets, that’s a strong signal.
If a client is working with a newer or unproven SP, closer monitoring of how the DataCap is being allocated will likely be necessary. As we’ll see, SP performance is increasingly being factored into allocator decision-making.
Downloadability Checks for Public Datasets
If a client is storing publicly accessible datasets, you should periodically verify that the data is, in fact, available for download. This is something teams check during audits, so any issues will eventually surface. Proactively addressing them not only helps allocators stay ahead of potential findings, but also shows clients that SPs are delivering data as promised. If they don’t, allocators will be in a position to take corrective action and avoid negative feedback during the audit.
As a minimum, all SPs that receive DataCap through an allocator should maintain a high retrievability score. This is easy to verify by reviewing compliance reports on datacapstats.io.
Reclaiming Unused DataCap
While using Smart Contracts to allocate DataCap isn’t a strict requirement, it is encouraged. It allows allocators to control DataCap. When a client doesn’t use all the DataCap as expected, it can easily be removed. Being able to reassign unused DataCap gives allocators more flexibility, and it helps reviewers see that allocations are being actively managed.
Reviewing Allocator and Client Reports
Allocators who regularly check their own allocator score, allocator reports, and client reports often avoid surprises during reviews and see higher audit scores. When these reports are consistently strong with no flags, the amount of follow-up needed from governance teams is significantly reduced.
If something looks off, taking the time to address it before a renewal request can help keep the process moving.
To read on how to use Smart Contract method for allocating DataCap, you can review the blogpost, the faq, video and the manuals on allocating DataCap and removing DataCap.
Documenting Client–SP Payments
The future success of the Filecoin economy depends on paid deals. For enterprise clients, demonstrating that payments have been made to SPs — ideally with an on-chain transaction ID — is one of the simplest ways to show that deals are active and verifiable.
In cases where Filecoin-native transactions aren’t used, payments on other chains or supporting documentation (like contracts or invoices) are also welcome for review. Keeping records organized in advance can help reduce audit complexity.
Transparency for Automated Allocators
Allocators running automated systems should make their code public and provide clear dashboards for governance teams to review. Some teams have also started to include their datasets samples within their interface, further simplifying the review process. Dashboards should show metrics like allocation velocity, DataCap usage, and client-level breakdowns. A security audit is always a good idea.
Having this information available can make it much easier for teams to understand how your system works — and support quicker approvals.
Looking Ahead: What May Matter More in 2026
While the above practices already help smooth the path to renewal, there are a few areas that will become more relevant in the coming year. In short: SP quality of service will be playing an increasing role in DataCap allocation.
Service-level agreement (SLA) Registration
At the beginning of the year, the client application template was adjusted to collect information about the service level indicators clients expect from their SPs. Throughout the first half of 2026, new tooling will be released to enable automated tracking and verification of service-level performance––measuring how consistently SPs meet their clients’ requirements. In preparation for this, allocators are encouraged to start exploring how to manually track the SLAs as part of their process. For automated allocators, SLA tracking should be integrated into the system. If you have any questions about how to do it, please reach out on Slack.
Quality Service
Once SLAs are registered, they’ll be transparent to the ecosystem. Allocators can support client success by keeping an eye on SLA scores. In general, if SPs consistently have low scores, governance teams will flag that as a concern, especially if it’s not being addressed. Even basic monitoring here can show that allocators are helping clients get the level of service they signed up for.
A Shift Toward Paid Deals
As the Filecoin network focuses on long-term sustainability, more weight will be placed on deals that include payment for storage.
In 2026, the emphasis on paid, onchain deals for storage will be enhanced quarter by quarter–– for both "enterprise" and “public open” datasets. By Q4, DataCap will only be issued if a proof of payment is present. Allocators should verify that clients applying for DataCap have paid their SPs, and keep a record of it to present during the audit. For more details, check out the bi-monthly Filecoin Plus Community Calls.
In Summary
The DataCap renewal process isn’t just about audits–– it’s about helping the network grow sustainably and transparently in service of real-world decentralized data storage. Allocators are a key part of that effort, as the teams that guard and drive customer success.
We hope this guidance is helpful as you plan for the year ahead. As always, if you have feedback or questions, please reach out through the usual Fil+ channels.
