Welcome to the FireBolt wiki!
FireBolt™ is a repository for 3D-printed (3DP) linear motion drives based on metric bolts or threaded rods and common 20x40mm extrusions. FireBolt™ lets you create your own custom linear actuators for minimal cost using globally available industry standard components.
FireBolt™ drives are best for applications that require high thrust loads or medium precision. Applications that require medium to long range of motion are less suited for use with FireBolt™ since transit times will typically be much longer than they would be for a belt drive or fast lead screw.
Use this wiki to help you choose, build and customize your own FireBolt™ drives.
The smallest and quietest FireBolt™ drives are based on the metric M5 fully threaded hex cap bolt, which has a thread pitch of 0.8mm. M5 hex cap bolts are commonly available in fully threaded sizes up to 60mm, which is long enough for many Z-axis linear actuators. With some effort, you can find longer fully threaded M5 hex cap bolts in sizes up to 100mm to suit your application. This video shows an M5 60mm hex cap bolt. Of course, you can always create custom lengths from M5 threaded rod and use lock nuts.

M6 fully threaded bolts are larger and noisier than M5 bolts. However, they do have a thread pitch of 1mm, which may be important for some applications. In addition, M6 bolts are readily available in longer lengths than M5 bolts.
