Finer steps for volume control, especially at low volumes #29
Comments
I agree. In a quiet environment, especially with over deviating DMR stations, the volume is just too loud. I wonder if there is a way to enable some AGC to at least average out the sound levels so there is not constant juggling of the volume when different stations talk. |
@mostlychris Definitely a problem on DMR, and to a lesser extent on analog. See #32 for a feature request specifically on adding AGC. The neat thing that the radio could do in addition to basic AGC would be to remember the current AGC setting individually for each recent DMR station since it has their IDs. |
It’s definitely to loud even in the smallest setting! People get offended easily when I’m just hearing with the radio. Is there a way to fix it? A sw patch could do that IMHO. |
Any progress on this? At the lowest setting the 878 is as loud as most radios on half volume. |
I agree that this is a problem, especially when one is wearing a headset with a boom mic. Even at the lowest setting, the sound is irritatingly loud. This should be a simple firmware fix. |
I seem to have the opposite problem, when I first got the 878 it was too loud now it has drastically reduced volume. Even set to 9 and the volume all the way up it is about half of what it was. anyone else have this problem? |
Make sure you haven’t programmed the max volume to a low setting. In the CPS program, go to Optional Settings/Volume-Audio, and see what the settings are. 8 will give you the greatest maximum volume. Indoors will cut down the max volume considerably. These settings, unfortunately, don’t solve the minimum volume problem.

I'm having super low RX audio volume on my AnyTone 878. I have the Max Vol Level set to 8 both in the radio and the CPS Volume/Audio section. With the RX set to 8 I can almost not hear anything even in a completely quiet room. |
I checked the CPS and it is set at 8. still getting low RX volume, I have to keep it at full volume when it is on my belt. |
I'm also having similar audio issues as ldaponte, and barneyfs41. I've tried going back to a base code plug and testing with FM out to verify some things but with the same results. I've now tried it with an External Bluetooth speaker and apparently that works depending on the Bluetooth speaker. Speakers I've tested with are the Bose soundlink mini "poor audio but could be due to Bose audio settings Volume was OK but audio had to much bass and distorted the audio ". Also tried with Anker Soundcore "much better audio results, volume was good and sound quality was clear" Much of this seams to have started after first firmware update 1.13 to 1.15 I've since also tried Firmware 1.17 but still no better results. |
I'm still testing. I thought it was related to my OpenSpot 3 but it is not
as I get the same results sending simplex DMR from a hytera and I get the
same low audio level out of the AnyTone. The audio quality sounds broken
and very raspi and I have to turn the volume to full to even hear that.
The TX output of the AnyTone sounds fine listening on the hytera and also
radio check is also reported fine by others on brandmeister via the
OpenSpot. I've tried firmware 1.17 and 1.09 but no difference. I've also
done a factory reset on the AnyTone with no luck. DMR RX was fine last
year right after I purchased the radio.

Any luck with the audio issues on the anytone ? Larry or Michael |
@barneyfs41 Nothing yet on my end. I've even just updated to the most recent firmware and still no luck. It's a real bummer as it basically reduces the HT to home OPS at best, and even then I can't copy most things at max vol. |
I finally returned the 878 to the dealer and Anytone agreed to replace the radio. It appears to be some sort of failure/fault that resetting to factory defaults does not resolve. For me the root cause is unknown. The reseller agreed to give me store credit as I did not want a replacement. Cheers |
Is the volume still too loud with recent firmware? |
Firmware 2.27
The volume knob steps don't allow fine enough adjustment. Even the lowest volume on the "indoor" setting can be too loud in some quieter environments, and there is too large a jump from the lowest volume to the next.
See also #21. Continuously variable volume would be the best solution, but that may require a hardware change. In the meantime, there ought to be a way to get finer volume steps for low volumes.
