When backing up android-sms uses a phonenumber@unknown.email address for
the other party in the conversation. It should check to see if they have a
contact within your contacts and add this address as another email address
so the backed up messages are linked with that contact.

I really think that contact merging is beyond the scope of simple SMS backup, 
though it 
might be interesting to see if there are some sync APIs in Android 2.0 which 
handle 
contact merge management.
