Open-source tool to automate hardware warranty dates & factory specs (Dell, Lenovo, HP, Apple)

Hi Snipe-IT community!

Like many IT teams, we struggled with blank or outdated warranty expiration dates and factory specs (CPU, RAM, SSD) on our hardware assets. Manually checking vendor portals for hundreds of serial numbers is tedious and error-prone.

To solve this, we created and open-sourced snipeit-warranty-sync:

What it does:

1. Scans your Snipe-IT hardware assets for serial numbers.
2. Infers brand (Dell Service Tag, Lenovo 8-char, HP 10-char, Apple) or uses model name heuristics.
3. Queries CheckWarranty API to fetch confirmed warranty expiration and purchase/shipment dates.
4. Updates Snipe-IT natively by computing warranty_months (and purchase_date if blank) so Snipe-IT automatically calculates and displays the expiration date.
5. Optionally populates factory BOM specs (CPU model, RAM, SSD capacity, display) into your Snipe-IT custom fields.

Key highlights:

• Zero external pip dependencies: Runs purely on Python's standard library (urllib.request / json).
• Safe Dry-Run: Use --dry-run to preview all planned updates without touching your database.
• Docker ready: docker run --rm ghcr.io/checkwarranty/snipeit-warranty-sync:latest --dry-run or via Docker Compose.
• Automated cron: Easy to schedule via Linux cron for hands-free daily reconciliation.
