Desktop entries

The XDG Desktop Entry specification defines a standard for applications to integrate into application menus of desktop environments implementing the XDG Desktop Menu specification.

Application entry

Desktop entries for applications, or .desktop files, are generally a combination of meta information resources and a shortcut of an application. These files usually reside in /usr/share/applications/ or /usr/local/share/applications/ for applications installed system-wide, or ~/.local/share/applications/ for user-specific applications. User entries take precedence over system entries.

The following application entry Helix.desktop is a modifier of the original Neovim.desktop:

Application entry have a options for that as described above:

...
Terminal=true
...

Vim and Neovim also needs a terminal to run through and have a working application entry just fine.

What is the benefit of it? Helix cannot navigate easily between projects yet unlike doom emacs. So you still need to cd and stuff in helix and can't do background task as well.

It will allow the file manager to open files in helix when double clicked, for example.

Good idea. I see that neovim has it too. Feel free to submit a pull request to contrib but I think we need to add it to the changelog to notify packagers to remember to use this.
