It would be very handy if there was a recently opened files menu item under the File menu (similar to Microsoft Office suite).

This is distinct from the autosave functionality in that it would be a list of files / URLs that you've opened before. Clicking on one would check for compatibility with the current reference. If compatible, it would open the file. If not compatible, would display a message and ask if you want to change references (and open the file and select that reference if you said yes).

The number of previous files / URLs saved could be an item in General Preferences.
