A simple HTTP and REST client for making API calls using a fluent syntax.

Overview

The aim of NRest is to provide a simple library that encapsulates of a lot of the heavy-lifting involved with building REST requests. REST is a pretty flexible and open standard, so a good REST client shouldn't prevent you from tweaking the request to handle those special cases, either. For that reason, NRest was designed to make everyday calls easy without hiding the underlying HTTP request. NRest does not reference System.Web, so it can be deployed and run in any environment.

Here's an example that builds up a request and processes the results, using JSON:

Just some highlights:

  • You can pass a base URL to the RestClient constructor and just specify the path later.
  • You can use placeholders in your URLs so you don't have to constantly build strings (RFC 6570).
  • You can handle success (200 status codes) and errors (400+ status codes) separately.
  • Or, you can handle specific codes using the When methods.
  • Or, you can provide a catch-all using the WhenUnhandled method.
  • Each handler can convert the result to a different value; use GetResult<T> to extract the value afterwards.
  • You can execute synchronously (Execute) or asynchronously (ExecuteAsync).
  • The response object will tell you:
    • the HTTP status code
    • whether it considered the response to be an error (400+)
    • Any headers send back with the response
    • the extracted response value

You can send updates just as easily:

NOTE This project is in research and development mode. At first, the interfaces may change quite a bit, but will hopefully soon stabilize. Feel free to shout out feature requests and bug reports.

Supported HTTP Methods

The RestClient class provides the following methods:

  • GET
  • HEAD
  • POST
  • PUT
  • PATCH
  • DELETE
  • OPTIONS
  • TRACE

If you need another method, you can explicitly pass the method name to the CreateRequest method.

An Open Model

One of the big issues with most .NET REST clients is that they try to hide away the underlying .NET HTTP web classes. NRest does the exact opposite and lets you directly interact with the underlying HttpWebRequest. When configuring the request, call ConfigureRequest to directly manipulate the underlying request.

If you don't want to repeat the same configuration for multiple requests, you can use the RestClient.Configure method to pre-configure each request you make with the client.

Headers

If your REST API requires special headers, you can add them to the request using the WithHeader method.

    .WithHeader("password", "SuperSecurePassword")

Alternatively, you can build up a NameValueCollection and pass it to the WithHeaders method.

You don't need to worry about overwriting special headers (Accept, Content-Type, etc.), NRest will automatically set these properties on the underlying HttpWebRequest. Don't worry if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Query Strings

If you have a query string, you can either incorporate placeholders into your URL or you can use the WithQueryParameter methods.

You can add as many query string pairs as you need. If you have an array of values, you can simply call the method multiple times with the same name.

Alternatively, you can build up a NameValueCollection and pass it to the WithQueryParameters method.

NOTE NRest doesn't automatically convert query strings to URL-encoded data when the request method changes. Be sure you explicitly set URL-encoded data using the WithUrlEncodedBody extension method (see below).

JSON

NRest depends on Json.NET to handle JSON serialization/deserialization. All of the JSON-related functionality is implemented in terms of extension methods. To use them, put using NRest.Json; at the top of your source.

To parse JSON results, you can use the FromJson<T> methods. The deserialized value will be stored in the response's Result property. You can either do a cast or call GetResult<T> (which also just does a cast).

If you are grabbing a list of records, just deserialize to a List<Customer> or Customer[].

You can pass JSON objects in the body of your request using the WithJsonBody method.

        .WithJsonBody(customer)
        .Execute();

Url Encoded Data (Forms)

NRest can also interpret URL encoded data, like that sent when submitting a form in HTML. All of the URL encoded data functionality is implemented in terms of extensions methods. To use them, put using NRest.Forms; at the top of your source.

To parse form data, you can use the FromForm methods. The key/value pairs will be stored in a NameValueCollection, which can be retrieved from the response's Result property. You can either do a cast or call GetResult<NameValueCollection> (which also just does a cast).

If you want to convert a NameValueCollection to an object, there are two extension methods, Create<T> and Update<T>. These will map the values in the NameValueCollection to an object. This requires the names in the collection to match the property names. If you need more control, you can implement your own IModelBinder<T> using the NameValueCollectionValueProvider class, both found in the ModelBinding namespace.

You can pass your URL encoded data in the body of your request using the WithUrlEncodedBody method. This method either takes a NameValueCollection or allows you to build one on the fly.

If you have an array of values, you can build up a NameValueCollection ahead of time and pass that to WithUrlEncodedBody.

    .Execute();

Multi-Part File Uploads

NRest can pass files (along with form data) in the body of your request using the WithMultiPartBody method. To use it, put using NRest.MultiPart; at the top of your source. This method allows you to build a request.

You can call WithFormData and WithFile as many times as needed.

If the API returns a multi-part response, you can extract the form data and files using the FromMultiPart method. This returns a MultiPartResponse object containing a NameValueCollection for the form fields (FormData) and a MultiPartFileLookup for grabbing the file contents (Files). Note that you shouldn't use this method if your files are too large to load into memory.

NameValueCollections, Dictionaries and Objects

NRest provides various overloads to allow you to build up your requests using NameValueCollections, Dictionarys and objects. Instead of manually adding query strings one value at a time, you can pass an object and NRest will automatically add a query string parameter for each property it finds. For example:

This will translate to the query string customers?Customer=123&Name=bob's+pizza. If you have a Dictionary, you can pass that instead and a parameter will be created for each key/value pair. NRest even handles collection properties, for example:

    .WithQueryParameters(new { CustomerId = new int[] { 123, 345, 11223, 7854 } })
    .Execute();
// Produces customers?CustomerId=123&CustomerId=345&CustomerId=11223&CustomerId=7854

The same overloads exists for query strings, headers, URL encoded values and multi-part form data.

Authentication

NRest provides convenience methods for Basic, NTLM and OAuth2 authentication. To use them, put using NRest.Authentication; at the top of your source.

Basic authentication is the least secure, but also the most simple. UseBasicAuthentication will encode and store the user name/password in a header.

NTLM authentication is usually used to connect to a server using Windows authentication. You can call UseNtlmAuthentication with or without a user name/password. If you don't provide a user name/password, it uses the default credentials, which usually belong to the user running the process.

You can also pass your access token when using OAuth2, by calling the various UseOAuth2* methods, depending on how you want to pass your access token (header, query string, URL-encoded data, etc.).

URI Templates (RFC 6570)

The URI templates you pass to the client can be a lot more complex than simple placeholders. NRest supports level 4 URI templates based on RFC 6570. This makes it a lot easier to build complex URLs, especially those containing embedded IDs, query strings, path segments (/), fragments (#) and other URI oddities. For example, here is a very complex URI that would be a pain to build otherwise:

Internally, the RestClient uses the UriTemplate class to create URIs. This class takes a URI template and an object or IDictionary with properties/keys matching what's in the template. It replaces the placeholders with the associated values. The template above will result in http://localhost:8080/api/v2/customers?q=rest&pagenum=3&pagesize=#results. You can work with the UriTemplate class directly if desired.
