This takes quite a while to run - it is possible that doing so causes an issue where the SSH server doesn't get a chance to send the buffer while the 'ls' runs. Need to investigate further.

This no longer freezes the SSH session, but it does every now and again cause rendering issues on the client terminal (such as failing to print newlines).
