I've only taken a look, but it looks like the first problem is a karma misconfiguration: when you're going through the karma init process, select "yes" for using require. Also the source and tests files list/spec should not point to the backend tests, I think.

Hm alright I think I'd tried saying yes at one point and it didn't like
that either. I'll try and give it more of a look though.

Ah, my bad, I had toyed with the thought of using the same test framework
for back and front end and I guess that got left in the configuration at
some point
