Setup without cost of audio interface #40

@janeriksteel I don't have that mic (FiFine K683A), so I don't have any opinion of it. But I do have a question. Can you use it to listen only to the audio coming from the Jamulus server (USB/computer), and not to the direct output of the mic? When I see devices like that mention low or zero-latency monitoring, I worry that it means you are listening to the mic before it has gone to the Jamulus server and back. With Jamulus, it's possible for the group to all play in time. That's because everyone is (or should be) hearing the same thing as mixed by the server. See Rule Number One here: https://jamulus.io/wiki/Getting-Started#having-trouble-cant-keep-in-time If a musician listens to their raw mic output (and then presumably mutes themselves in their own mix), then they cannot possibly play/sing in accurate time with the rest of the group. They will be hearing something different. Maybe it could work for your use case if the delays are really small, or if your music doesn't require precise timing. I couldn't find an online manual or specs for that mic that made it clear if it could monitor only from USB while still sending from the mic. But in the photos I didn't see any switch or control for it. |

Hi,
Earlier today I was able to successfully use the jambox image without needing to use an internal or external audio interface. I'm building many of boxes for users, so I have been trying to reduce cost and minimize the amount of hardware I have to send them.
I used a vanilla raspberry pi 2gb and this FiFine USB mic
It handles both input and output (you can plug in 3.5mm standard headphone jack directly into mic) and is correctly identified and used by the default jamulus pi image when I plug into the pi's usb port. I have to buy microphones for my users anyway, and this removes the need for an internal or external audio interface. For the price, the mic isn't bad either. The whole setup matched or beat the latency I get from my overpowered laptop with a focusurite audio interface.
Just wanted to let people know in case it helped them as much as it helped me out. Reduced my cost down to ~$130 (from $200+) for the whole package. There is a mic level and 'mute' button right on the mic and no extra cables. It's pretty great.
