После генерации .editorconfig'а и открытия его в VS, VS начинает догенеривать недостающие значения. Добавляются некоторые поля, которые уже и так есть. Например, всё что связано с dotnet_style_* и csharp_style_*. Складывается ощущение, что студия, ожидает, что все dotnet* опции будут находиться в секции [*.{cs,vb}], а csharp* под [*.cs].
