About

I made this little tool to synchronize my tumblr blogs (http://blog.labe.me and http://blog-fr.labe.me).

The idea was to draft/post/edit my posts from emacs and org-mode and then update my blogs with make.

Each blog is contained in an org file.

org2tumblr transform org entries into markdown.

org2tumblr keeps track of tumblr posts IDs in your org file (so entries can be updated later).

org2tumblr uses TODO/DONE to create a draft and/or publish it.

org2tumblr also wraps googlecl to synchronize a local picasa folder on picasa and replaces references to your local images accordingly on your blog.

Since this project is a quick hack, don’t expect it to work on your computer without some elbow’s grease :)

License

MIT, do what you want with this.

Requirements

Installation

Get org2tumblr project and then compile it

make
sudo make install # will install /usr/bin/org2tumblr

:

# alternatively set PREFIX like this to specify another install prefix

:

make install PREFIX=$HOME/local

Configuration

create a project directory to host your blog(s)

Follow the example structure to get an idea.

create a .tumblr credential file inside your project’s root or in your home folder:

email: someemail@example.com
password: mysecret

don’t forget to configure googlecl

I don’t remember how I did that but calling googlecl on the command line with one or two parameters should suffice :)

For reference, my ~/.config/googlecl/config file looks like this:

[DOCS]
spreadsheet_format = xls
format = txt
spreadsheet_editor = openoffice.org
presentation_format = ppt
presentation_editor = openoffice.org
document_format = txt
drawing_format = png

[CALENDAR]
fields = title,when

[GENERAL]
regex = True
url_field = site
missing_field_value = N/A
fields = title,url-site
cap_results = False
max_retries = 2
hostid = <myuser>@<mycomputer>
retry_delay = 0.5
date_print_format = %b %d %H:%M

[YOUTUBE]
max_results = 50

[CONTACTS]
fields = name,email

[PICASA]
skip_auth = True
user = <myemail>

The interesting part resides in [PICASA], the skip_auth clause which prevent a password prompt.

create your blog file using the provided example.org file

test the synchronization calling make

Usage

That’s up to you.

I use the Makefile and make to synchronize my blogs, picasa as well as my static website with a simple keystroke but you may prefer something else.

Good luck :)

Feature I will implement or would like to see implemented

  • do not synchronize non modified posts (it takes ages for a big blog)
  • some way to specify whether or not twitter should be informed of the new post
  • a tool to talk to google plus, twitter, facebook, etc to promote your posts on your social networks
