This morning I talked with @MarionRousseaux and @SimonSarazin about the alternative system of take-what-you-want (rémunération libre in French) they've been experimenting, to see if we can integrate it into Liberapay (as previously mentioned in liberapay/liberapay.org#23 (comment)).

There are several differences compared to how Liberapay teams work:

  • Instead of distributing the available income, they take from a virtual budget, which in their case usually corresponds to a grant they're expecting/hoping to receive, but which could be a donation goal instead (similar to Time-bound funding #603).
  • They can modify takes from previous weeks (they're using spreadsheets in Google Docs).
  • In order to actually get paid the contributors have to send an invoice, to the organization which acts as the legal entity for the project and receives the donations/grants.
  • They have indicative hourly rates to guide contributors (Team income tables lack context #545).
  • (Others I'm forgetting?)

Related issue: #505 (which superseded #64).

Hi Changaco,

Sorry for this late anwser.

  • Instead of distributing the available income, they take from a virtual budget, which in their case usually corresponds to a grant they're expecting/hoping to receive, but which could be a donation goal instead (similar to Time-bound funding #603)
Not really, that's money we have in most of the case but that we can't fund directly in a liberapay account because we need

  • They can modify takes from previous weeks (they're using spreadsheets in Google Docs).
Not really, we could accept that no modification could be done one week or two weeks later. But as we have different take each week, we need to be able to insert the take of the past week if we forgot to do it

  • In order to actually get paid the contributors have to send an invoice, to the organization which acts as the legal entity for the project and receives the donations/grants.
That's the most important need. We don't want the money to be transfered until we get the invoice done by the person and accepted by the organization.

  • They have indicative hourly rates to guide contributors (Team income tables lack context #545).
We use it sometimes. But it's not an urgent need. It's just the idea to be able to add comments around the take what you want system so it's easier for people to understand how to take money

How do you thing we could go in this direction @Changaco ?
With @pgno we think we could work on a demo version of it using maybe a fork of liberapay and to see finally it it can be integrated in liberapay (it could be ideal ;-)!!)
We have some money to finance a work on it and we really need it now as we're more and more workers gettings funds from "take what you want system" (thanks @chadwhitacre ;-)) and we need to unify that ;-)

I've started working on this today.

@SimonSarazin A piece of your message is missing, after "because we need".

Cool ! Don't hesitate to ask for more information or help. We also can dedicate a specific amount of money (should we give xxx€ donatinos on liberapay ?) and get conference discussion (hangout or other).

For my message : Not really, that's money we have in most of the case but that we can't fund directly in a liberapay account because we need to be sure that people will give us an invoice from their own legal statuts once they raised money. The idea is to use liberapay and the whole system but as a virtual budget that we validate once an invoice is sent. The idea is really close from liberapay as we want a contributive income from divers open projects with the take what you want system.
