Use opqaue pointers for the internal device state structure #1

I think this makes the code easier to extend with even more backend drivers. The previously used common union caused implementation details to creep into lkl.h and I don't think backend implementations should change lkl.h at all. Additionally, strict users of the lkl library are now able to implement their own backends without modifying modifying and recompiling lkl.

Maybe it even makes sense to include the lkl_dev_net_ops part of lkl_netdev and use inheritance for implementation details but I'll leave that open for discussion.

Using opaque pointers remove the implementation details from lkl.h
and increase the scalability for additional device emulation backends.

@tommie-lie thanks for the patch !

(I assume you can start your VDE patch with this branch)

though this branch is kind of work-in-progress one, that clean up is really necessary in near future.

it would be nice if you use scripts/checkpatch.pl to check your patch since I see some different indent(s) in the patch: I will then merge this PR easily.

Sorry for the wrong indentation, I forgot to check for that and my IDE did not make the errors obvious enough :-/

I figured that it's still a work in progress ;-)
I was about to start a "dirty" version of the VDE when I noticed your commit and decided that it would be easier to clean it up.

I'd be happy to do further maintenance work if you see other things that you don't have the time to fix right away.

This can occur because the SPI controller driver (SPI_PXA2XX) is built as
module and thus not necessarily loaded. While building SPI_PXA2XX into the
kernel would make the problem disappear, it appears prudent to ensure that
the driver is instantiated before accessing its data structures.

arm and arm64 use different config options to specify big endian. This
needs taking into account when including code/headers between the two
architectures.

A case in point is PAN, which uses the __instr_arm() macro to output
instructions. The macro comes from opcodes.h, which lives under arch/arm.
On a big-endian build the mismatched config options mean the instruction
isn't byte swapped correctly, resulting in undefined instruction exceptions
during boot:

While retesting the SRP initiator I ran the command "rmmod mlx4_ib"
while I/O was in progress. That command triggers SCSI device removal
indirectly. Avoid that this action triggers the following deadlock:

If the lower or upper directory of an overlayfs mount belong to a btrfs
file system and we fsync the file through the overlayfs' merged directory
we ended up accessing an inode that didn't belong to btrfs as if it were
a btrfs inode at btrfs_sync_file() resulting in a crash like the following:

This started happening since commit 4bacc9c (overlayfs: Make f_path
always point to the overlay and f_inode to the underlay) and even though
after this change we could still access the btrfs inode through
struct file->f_mapping->host or struct file->f_inode, we would end up
resulting in more similar issues later on at check_parent_dirs_for_sync()
because the dentry we got (from struct file->f_path.dentry) was from
overlayfs and not from btrfs, that is, we had no way of getting the dentry
that belonged to btrfs (we always got the dentry that belonged to
overlayfs).

The new patch from Miklos Szeredi, titled "vfs: add file_dentry()" and
recently submitted to linux-fsdevel, adds a file_dentry() API that allows
us to get the btrfs dentry from the input file and therefore being able
to fsync when the upper and lower directories belong to btrfs filesystems.

This issue has been reported several times by users in the mailing list
and bugzilla. A test case for xfstests is being submitted as well.

md_super_write() and corresponding md_super_wait() generally are called
with reconfig_mutex locked, which prevents disk disappears. There is one
case this rule is broken. write_sb_page of bitmap.c doesn't hold the
mutex. next_active_rdev does increase rdev reference, but it decreases
the reference too early (eg, before IO finish). disk can disappear at
the window. We unconditionally increase rdev reference in
md_super_write() to avoid the race.

If we rename an inode A (be it a file or a directory), create a new
inode B with the old name of inode A and under the same parent directory,
fsync inode B and then power fail, at log tree replay time we end up
removing inode A completely. If inode A is a directory then all its files
are gone too.

Example scenarios where this happens:
This is reproducible with the following steps, taken from a couple of
test cases written for fstests which are going to be submitted upstream
soon:

   # Scenario 1

   mkfs.btrfs -f /dev/sdc
   mount /dev/sdc /mnt
   mkdir -p /mnt/a/x
   echo "hello" > /mnt/a/x/foo
   echo "world" > /mnt/a/x/bar
   sync
   mv /mnt/a/x /mnt/a/y
   mkdir /mnt/a/x
   xfs_io -c fsync /mnt/a/x
   <power failure happens>

   The next time the fs is mounted, log tree replay happens and
   the directory "y" does not exist nor do the files "foo" and
   "bar" exist anywhere (neither in "y" nor in "x", nor the root
   nor anywhere).

   # Scenario 2

   mkfs.btrfs -f /dev/sdc
   mount /dev/sdc /mnt
   mkdir /mnt/a
   echo "hello" > /mnt/a/foo
   sync
   mv /mnt/a/foo /mnt/a/bar
   echo "world" > /mnt/a/foo
   xfs_io -c fsync /mnt/a/foo
   <power failure happens>

   The next time the fs is mounted, log tree replay happens and the
   file "bar" does not exists anymore. A file with the name "foo"
   exists and it matches the second file we created.

Another related problem that does not involve file/data loss is when a
new inode is created with the name of a deleted snapshot and we fsync it:

   mkfs.btrfs -f /dev/sdc
   mount /dev/sdc /mnt
   mkdir /mnt/testdir
   btrfs subvolume snapshot /mnt /mnt/testdir/snap
   btrfs subvolume delete /mnt/testdir/snap
   rmdir /mnt/testdir
   mkdir /mnt/testdir
   xfs_io -c fsync /mnt/testdir # or fsync some file inside /mnt/testdir
   <power failure>

   The next time the fs is mounted the log replay procedure fails because
   it attempts to delete the snapshot entry (which has dir item key type
   of BTRFS_ROOT_ITEM_KEY) as if it were a regular (non-root) entry,
   resulting in the following error that causes mount to fail:

Fix this by forcing a transaction commit when such cases happen.
This means we check in the commit root of the subvolume tree if there
was any other inode with the same reference when the inode we are
fsync'ing is a new inode (created in the current transaction).

Test cases for fstests, covering all the scenarios given above, were
submitted upstream for fstests:

functions, but missed a code path only executed on lid close/open
on older hardware. The result was a deadlock when closing and

Aside from the crash, the shortcomings of that patch are as follows:

 - It makes the ib_srpt driver use I/O contexts allocated by
   transport_alloc_session_tags() but it does not initialize these I/O
   contexts properly.  All the initializations performed by
   srpt_alloc_ioctx() are skipped.

 - It swaps the order of the send ioctx allocation and the transition to
   RTR mode which is wrong.

 - The amount of memory that is needed for I/O contexts is doubled.

 - srpt_rdma_ch.free_list is no longer used but is not removed.

When sending a UDPv6 message longer than MTU, account for the length
of fragmentable IPv6 extension headers in skb->network_header offset.
Same as we do in alloc_new_skb path in __ip6_append_data().

This ensures that later on __ip6_make_skb() will make space in
headroom for fragmentable extension headers:

find_outdev calls inet{,6}_fib_lookup_dev() or dev_get_by_index() to
find the output device. In case of an error, inet{,6}_fib_lookup_dev()
returns error pointer and dev_get_by_index() returns NULL. But the function
only checks for NULL and thus can end up calling dev_put on an ERR_PTR.
This patch adds an additional check for err ptr after the NULL check.

Before: Trying to add an mpls route with no oif from user, no available
path to 10.1.1.8 and no default route:

Adding a 2nd PHY to cpsw results in a NULL pointer dereference
as below. Fix by maintaining a reference to each PHY node in slave
struct instead of a single reference in the priv struct which was
overwritten by the 2nd PHY.

Fix this by verifying that qstat_pv_kick_unlock is in fact non-zero,
similarly to what the qstat_pv_latency_wake case does, as if nothing
else, this can come from resetting the statistics, thus having 0 kicks
should be quite valid in this context.

Commit da4e4f1 ("drivers/perf: arm_pmu: implement CPU_PM notifier")
added code in the arm perf infrastructure that allows the kernel to
save/restore perf counters whenever the CPU enters a low-power
state. The kernel saves/restores the counters for each active event
through the armpmu_{stop/start} ARM pmu API, so that the low-power state
enter/exit cycle is emulated through pmu start/stop operations for each
event in use.

However, calling armpmu_start() for each active event on power up
executes code that requires RCU locking (perf_event_update_userpage())
to be functional, so, given that the core may call the CPU_PM notifiers
while running the idle thread in an quiescent RCU state this is not

This patch wraps the armpmu_start() call (that indirectly calls
perf_event_update_userpage()) on CPU_PM notifier power state exit (or
failed entry) within the RCU_NONIDLE() macro so that the RCU subsystem

the armpmu_start() call duration, therefore fixing the issue.

With the joys of things running concurrently, there's always a chance
that the port we get passed in drm_dp_payload_send_msg() isn't actually
valid anymore. Because of this, we need to make sure we validate the
reference to the port before we use it otherwise we risk running into
various race conditions. For instance, on the Dell MST monitor I have
here for testing, hotplugging it enough times causes us to kernel panic:

Huge pages are not normally available to PV guests. Not suppressing
hugetlbfs use results in an endless loop of page faults when user mode
code tries to access a hugetlbfs mapped area (since the hypervisor
denies such PTEs to be created, but error indications can't be
propagated out of xen_set_pte_at(), just like for various of its

This patch prepares the LKL device code for the offload support.
The gist of it is to change the tx() and rx() interfaces to accept a
vector of buffers (like iovec) rather than just a single one. This
allows the support of sg list originated from skb's frags that come
down from the stack above to be passed to a backend device without
the need to copy.

The patch introduces a new environment variable "LKL_HIJACK_OFFLOAD"
to the hijack code to allow easy enabling of any combination of
offload features. Once the desirable offload features are decided,
the code will program the tap device accordingly, e.g., to properly
translate offload flags, and decide whether IFF_VNET_HDR needs to be
enabled. It will also program the selected features into LKL kernel's
virtio driver. Note that the actual code to program the ring properly
for various offload flavors is in the 2nd commit.

The patch also allows an existing env var "LKL_HIJACK_DEBUG" to take
on a hex value, e.g., "export LKL_HIJACK_DEBUG=0x100". This is used
to set an internal debug flag "lkl_debug" in the hijack code for
diagnosis purpose. The above export statement, for example, will
cause the LKL kernel to pause after the hijack'ed app exits. This
allows one to debug or collect info from the LKL kernel before it
quits.

The commit below added a call to the ->destroy() callback for all qdiscs
which failed in their ->init(), but some were not prepared for such
change and can't handle partially initialized qdisc. HTB is one of them
and if any error occurs before the qdisc watchdog timer and qdisc work are
initialized then we can hit either a null ptr deref (timer->base) when
canceling in ->destroy or lockdep error info about trying to register
a non-static key and a stack dump. So to fix these two move the watchdog
timer and workqueue init before anything that can err out.
To reproduce userspace needs to send broken htb qdisc create request,
tested with a modified tc (q_htb.c).

The below commit added a call to ->destroy() on init failure, but multiq
still frees ->queues on error in init, but ->queues is also freed by
->destroy() thus we get double free and corrupted memory.

Very easy to reproduce (eth0 not multiqueue):

CBQ can fail on ->init by wrong nl attributes or simply for missing any,
f.e. if it's set as a default qdisc then TCA_OPTIONS (opt) will be NULL
when it is activated. The first thing init does is parse opt but it will
dereference a null pointer if used as a default qdisc, also since init
failure at default qdisc invokes ->reset() which cancels all timers then
we'll also dereference two more null pointers (timer->base) as they were
never initialized.

To reproduce:

netem can fail in ->init due to missing options (either not supplied by
user-space or used as a default qdisc) causing a timer->base null
pointer deref in its ->destroy() and ->reset() callbacks.

sch_tbf calls qdisc_watchdog_cancel() in both its ->reset and ->destroy
callbacks but it may fail before the timer is initialized due to missing
options (either not supplied by user-space or set as a default qdisc),
also q->qdisc is used by ->reset and ->destroy so we need it initialized.

The original motivation for this change originated from Marc Gonzales
indicating that his network driver did not have its adjust_link callback
executing with phydev->link = 0 while he was expecting it.

PHYLIB has never made any such guarantees ever because phy_stop() merely just
tells the workqueue to move into PHY_HALTED state which will happen
asynchronously.

The locking order of vlan_rwsem (LOCK A) and then rtnl (LOCK B),
contradicts other flows such as ipoib_open possibly causing a deadlock.
To prevent this deadlock heavy flush is called with RTNL locked and
only then tries to acquire vlan_rwsem.

CONFIG_PAGE_TABLE_ISOLATION is relatively new and intrusive feature that may
still have some corner cases which could take some time to manifest and be
fixed. It would be useful to have Oops messages indicate whether it was
enabled for building the kernel, and whether it was disabled during boot.

Example of fully enabled:

We can decide to remove this after the feature has been tested in the field

With the replacement of the pid bitmap and hashtable with an idr in
alloc_pid started occassionally failing when allocating the first pid
in a pid namespace.  Things were not completely reset resulting in
the first allocated pid getting the number 2 (not 1).  Which
further resulted in ns->proc_mnt not getting set and eventually
causing an oops in proc_flush_task.

Improve the quality of the implementation by resetting the place to
start allocating pids on failure to allocate the first pid.

As improving the quality of the implementation is the goal remove the now
unnecesarry disable_pid_allocations call when we fail to mount proc.

The issue is caused by the xhci ring structures being reallocated
when the system is resumed, but pointers to the old structures
being retained in the debugfs files "private" field:

The proposed patch fixes this issue by storing a pointer to the xhci_ring
field in the xhci device structure in debugfs rather than directly
storing a pointer to the xhci_ring.

This function is used from two places: rtnl_dump_ifinfo and
rtnl_getlink. In rtnl_getlink(), we give a request skb into
get_target_net(), but in rtnl_dump_ifinfo, we give a response skb
into get_target_net().
The problem here is that NETLINK_CB() isn't initialized for the response
skb. In both cases we can get a user socket and give it instead of skb
into get_target_net().

This bug was found by syzkaller with this call-trace:

In fib6_add(), pn could be NULL if fib6_add_1() failed to return a fib6
node. Checking pn != fn before accessing pn->leaf makes sure pn is not

This is introduced by commit a4a3ede ("mm: zero reserved and
unavailable struct pages").

The reason is some efi reserved boot ranges is not reported in E820 ram.
In my case it is a bgrt buffer:

In zero_resv_unavail it would be better to check pfn_valid first before
zero the page struct.  This fixes the problem and potential other
similar problems.  Also as Pavel Tatashin suggested checks pfn_valid at
the beginning of the section.

The range is backed by real memory.  The memory range is efi "Boot
Service Data", that means after ExitBootServices() these ranges can be
used as system ram.  But some of them need to be reserved, for example
the bgrt image address in an acpi table, if the image memory is freed
then kexec reboot will fail because kexec inherit same acpi table to
initialize the driver.

The hotplug code uses its own workqueue to handle IRQ requests
(pseries_hp_wq), however that workqueue is initialized after
init_ras_IRQ(). That can lead to a kernel panic if any hotplug
interrupts fire after init_ras_IRQ() but before pseries_hp_wq is
initialised. eg:

In the current code, when creating a new fib6 table, tb6_root.leaf gets
initialized to net->ipv6.ip6_null_entry.
If a default route is being added with rt->rt6i_metric = 0xffffffff,
fib6_add() will add this route after net->ipv6.ip6_null_entry. As
null_entry is shared, it could cause problem.

In order to fix it, set fn->leaf to NULL before calling
fib6_add_rt2node() when trying to add the first default route.
And reset fn->leaf to null_entry when adding fails or when deleting the
last default route.

syzkaller reported the following issue which is fixed by this commit:

When we retire a signaled fence, we free the dependency tree. However,
we skip clearing the list so that if we then try to adjust the priority
of the signaled fence, we may walk the list of freed dependencies.

The logic in __ip6_append_data() assumes that the MTU is at least large
enough for the headers.  A device's MTU may be adjusted after being
added while sendmsg() is processing data, resulting in
__ip6_append_data() seeing any MTU.  For an mtu smaller than the size of
the fragmentation header, the math results in a negative 'maxfraglen',
which causes problems when refragmenting any previous skb in the
skb_write_queue, leaving it possibly malformed.

Instead sendmsg returns EINVAL when the mtu is calculated to be less
than IPV6_MIN_MTU.

Reason is that sch_ingress and sch_clsact are doing mini_qdisc_pair_init()
which sets up miniq pointers to cpu_{b,q}stats from the underlying qdisc.
Problem is that this cannot work since they are actually set up right after
the qdisc ->init() callback in qdisc_create(), so first packet going into
sch_handle_ingress() tries to call mini_qdisc_bstats_cpu_update() and we
therefore panic.

In order to fix this, allocation of {b,q}stats needs to happen before we
call into ->init(). In net-next, there's already such option through commit
d59f5ff ("net: sched: a dflt qdisc may be used with per cpu stats").
However, the bug needs to be fixed in net still for 4.15. Thus, include
these bits to reduce any merge churn and reuse the static_flags field to
set TCQ_F_CPUSTATS, and remove the allocation from qdisc_create() since
there is no other user left. Prashant Bhole ran into the same issue but
for net-next, thus adding him below as well as co-author. Same issue was
also reported by Sandipan Das when using bcc.

When a tail call fails, it is documented that the tail call should
continue execution at the following instruction.  An example tail call
sequence is:

In pppoe_sendmsg(), reserving dev->hard_header_len bytes of headroom
was probably fine before the introduction of ->needed_headroom in
commit f5184d2 ("net: Allow netdevices to specify needed head/tailroom").

But now, virtual devices typically advertise the size of their overhead
in dev->needed_headroom, so we must also take it into account in
skb_reserve().
Allocation size of skb is also updated to take dev->needed_tailroom
into account and replace the arbitrary 32 bytes with the real size of
a PPPoE header.

This issue was discovered by syzbot, who connected a pppoe socket to a
gre device which had dev->header_ops->create == ipgre_header and
dev->hard_header_len == 0. Therefore, PPPoE didn't reserve any
headroom, and dev_hard_header() crashed when ipgre_header() tried to
prepend its header to skb->data.

Admittedly PPPoE shouldn't be allowed to run on non Ethernet-like
interfaces, but reserving space for ->needed_headroom is a more
fundamental issue that needs to be addressed first.

Same problem exists for __pppoe_xmit(), which also needs to take
dev->needed_headroom into account in skb_cow_head().
