I know the RGB driver is a bit outta wack. I have to get it fixed and I simply have not had a lot of time to be able to do it. What I need to do is to separate the rotation stuff out of the RGB driver and make it available to all of the different display busses along with the current way the RGB driver handles doing the rotation using the second core.

There is no reason to remove it as the problem is not being caused by the rotation. It is being caused by the copying of the partial buffer to the full buffer and having some piece of math slightly off.

from what I am seeing in your image that is caused by the frequency not being right. That will cause the displayed image to be shifted.

I know there is no way the library is going to be able to update the display at 16mhz and have it be correct. This is because of the added overhead with MicroPython.

I will mess about with the RGB driver and make sure it is working properly with a display I have. I will let you know my findings.

I’m trying to use the latest MicroPython together with ESP-IDF 5.4.1. I had to make some modifications to the RGB bus to get the buffer from the panel. All my other RGB displays work correctly, including SPI and QSPI panels. However, this specific display — the one we discussed — still has an issue: the image continuously drifts from left to right, so it probably needs some additional adjustments.

I am not sure if you are aware that the ST7262 driver IC has a secondary connection which is a low speed SPI3 wire connection which is used to set the IC up so it will work with different panels. I have not dove in and really looked yet to see what kinds of settings there are but I am sure there is probably something in there that would make a change and solve the problem. It's either that OR you have something off with one of the parameters being passed to the bus driver. Just messing around with the polarities on the hsync and the vsync as well as the pulse timings for those as well.

Drifting between right and left most times is caused by the pixel clock being set to high. try lowering it 500,000hz and se if it still drifts. it will drift one way when set to high and when set to low it will drift the opposite way. The pixel clock seen for a display where the code is C code is not going to work. This is because of the additional overhead caused by MicroPython. That number will need to be lowered. I have found that 12500000 is a good starting point for most RGB displays. It might need to be tweaked up or down a little bit form there.

one of the things that can be done to get a better refresh speed is to overclock the SPIRAM SPI speed. if you are using an S3 that has octal SPIRAM and Octal SPI flash you can get an effective clock of 240mHz from the SPIRAM. The tradeoff is going to be more power used and it is recommend that you add some passive cooling to the ESP32 when you do this. A small heat sink on the top of the ESP32 using some thermal tape to hold it on is all that is needed. You don't have to add the heat sink if the ambient temps are not above something like 80°F but it is still recommended.

I believe that performance wise it might be better to use CONFIG_LCD_RGB_RESTART_IN_VSYNC than CONFIG_SPIRAM_XIP_FROM_PSRAM. Check and see if there is a performance difference between the CONFIG_LCD_RGB_RESTART_IN_VSYNC and CONFIG_SPIRAM_XIP_FROM_PSRAM.
