This is a general kind of "shortcut" approach, where the first method to succeed in a list of methods will be considered to have generated the outputs for the command.

The first couple of commits are cleanup, followed by a bit of minor refactoring to help facilitate the feature.
The last commit is a bit larger, but adds the actual support for running multiple shell commands per operation.
