CI failure is due to changes in the base branch which should (hopefully) be approved and merged soon, I think it's best to leave this be until that time. In the meantime the docstrings have been updated, thank you for taking a look! |

Why do we need to pass this in? Can we not get it from the the first context's prev_group?

We need this because we don't have really any state group info in the UnpersistedEventContext at this juncture - that info is all assigned/calculated in the persist or in this case the batch persist function of the class UnpersistedEventContex, which this function is a part of.

These context don't have a prev_group, which is technically fine, but there is other code that looks at prev_group for optimisation purposes. We probably do want to add them, hopefully easy enough.

We do set the prev group immediately after this function returns and the UnpersistedEventContext is turned into an EventContext (in the batch_persist_unpersisted_contexts function), the UnpersistedEventContext isn't used anywhere else so I think it is fine?

Can we also add a test that uses the new DB function and then checks the expected state groups have been inserted into all the right places in the DB? |

This work builds upon #14675, and adds functionality to batch persist the state groups of unpersisted event contexts. The impetus for this work is #13961, and it is part of the work to speed up DM/room creation. Should be reviewable commit-by-commit.
