This was discussed in various issues - this one can be used to track this request and post ideas.

Summary of the new feature/enhancement

The current icon that shows up in the system tray uses the PowerToys app icon. To feel as native as possible, it would be nice to use a black/white icon that are similar to system icons such as network, sound and network.

Proposed technical implementation details

An outlined version of the PowerToys icon will feel more native to the user. Some requirements:

  • Theme support (white with dark theme, black with light theme) (Must)
  • Should look very similar to the app icon so users recognize it (Must)
  • It could be used to show e.g. machine states (Could)

I came here to say, I am really sorry but I hate the current system tray icon. I loved original PowerToys back in the day and wanted it give this a try but can't stand seeing that hideous icon on my screen. That being said, The icons above do not look bad at all, especially the top right one on black.

We could make this a system option. Icon vs outline

As mentioned in #3917 (comment) is the plan to not pursue this?

it is an idea we still may do. No one has really pushed for it and we have higher priority work we'd rather focus on

I still love this idea to be honest

I think that, even if it is not used to signal state, it would be better for consistency with other tray icons to implement this in some form.

I am sorry, but this.. please, we have been waiting long already for such a slight touch, but with huge visual impact.

Personally I would not use such words as #3523 (comment) but I can relate that the non-fitting icon is a reason why I run PowerToys only when I need them and not keep them being launched on startup.

In my opinion, this is just an unfortunate new application icon. It was selected without considering how it would look on the Taskbar. Only a separate icon for the Taskbar will save the current situation.

In the reality of Windows 11, it looks bad.
