Information-centric Cloud Services for Safety in Industrial IoTs

Background

Build an information-centric cloud service to improve workers' safety (and save lives!) in harsh industrial IoTs.

One of our current research efforts is to analyze the applicability of future Internet paradigm to the industrial IoT. One example for such a paradigm is information-centric networking (ICN). ICN shifts away from the host-centric paradigm and focuses on named data, where connectivity may well be intermittent. Data in ICN becomes independent from location, application, storage, and means of transportation. ICN promises a new quality of secure, reliable, and differentiated network services. However, up till now there are no ICN-powered cloud services available and we want to change this with your help!

Your challenge

Your mission is to provide an ICN-powered cloud service based on AWS IoT for our gas detector networks. Your solution consists of a gateway, which tunnels ICN messages between our sensor network and your own cloud service. The cloud service should monitor the live oxygen readings of the MSA XCell sensors in the network, making sure that workers are safe to perform their duties in the area. We provide you with an interface to our sensor network, so you don't have to worry on hacking our gas detectors. Your solution will run on AWS IoT and we will support you with all the power and knowledge to build this service. The gateway needs to receive ICN messages via MQTT from an AWS IoT-powered cloud service and has to forward this data to a local gas sensor network. In addition, the gateway also needs to be able to forward ICN messages received via the sensor network to your cloud service.

We encourage all intergalactic life forms to apply for this project! You don't need to be a wizard in Python, JavaScript, and/or MQTT to complete this challenge! Don't worry; you can learn everything necessary along the hackathon!

About MSA

MSA Safety is the global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of safety products that protect people and industrial infrastructures. Our products are used by workers around the world in a broad range of markets, including the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, the fire service, the construction industry, or mining. These work environments are often considered hazardous and dangerous events may occur any time and include exposure to toxic or combustible gases, oxygen depletion in confined spaces, gas leaks or sudden outbursts of fire. Workers have to wear low power batteryoperated gas detectors to monitor gas levels and to alert co-workers locally in case of danger. Our portable gas detectors probe for various gases and are equipped with a wireless network interface, which send events to other devices and to our cloud service over a border router.
