Hi everyone! I am a non-programmer with an older PC, and I’m amazed by what the REA project and Claude Code can do. I would like to propose a community challenge: cloning or creating an open-source alternative to HelpNDoc.
What is HelpNDoc?
It is a desktop WYSIWYG text editor focused on HAT (Help Authoring Tool). The main goal is single-source publishing: you write a manual, guide, or documentation once, and the software automatically exports it to multiple formats.
Key features to replicate:
• A clean, lightweight WYSIWYG text editor.
• A table of contents (TOC) manager on the side.
• Single-source compilation to multiple formats: HTML (Web Help), PDF, ePub, Kindle, Word (DOCX), and CHM.
Crucial Requirements for this Challenge:
Why this is highly beneficial for the community:
• Great REA Test Case: Replicating a WYSIWYG editor and its document-parsing/compilation engine using MCP and Claude Code would be an incredible demonstration of REA’s reverse-engineering and code-generation capabilities.
• Filling a Gap in Linux: There is a huge lack of modern, lightweight, and completely free open-source HAT tools for technical writers, indie developers, and students on Linux.
Would anyone in the REA community be interested in taking this on as a benchmark project or case study? I can provide detailed descriptions of the user experience and interface behavior if needed!
Tenks!!!
