I think this is the bare minimum needed to install deps + build + test

Ah right we need msgpack, but the Ubuntu packages are out-of-date (per the README)... I'll look into that.

This looks reasonable to me, thought I haven't used travis-ci before so I am unqualified to make a judgement here...

Cool, from now on you should see status checks on PRs now that show whether compiling msgpack+libptio+tests worked.
