Turning on this setting would cause MyAlerts to use some different templates which direct AJAX calls through alerts.php rather than xmlhttp.php, to support client plugins which have not yet implemented our new myalerts_register_client_alert_formatters hook (and which don't register their formatters via the xmlhttp hook either).
