Genetic Synth (prototype)

Made for this exhibition: http://immmedialab.wordpress.com/2013/05/06/izlozba-soundart-bioart-10-18-svibnja-tehnicki-muzej/

###English

The genetic synth is meant to intuitively demonstrate the abstract phenomenon of molecular evolution. Through a microcontroller, the genetic code is directly translated into a tetratonic musical scale -- each of the four nucleotides makes a different tone and turns on a different LED. The left channel plays a segment of the human genome, while the right channel plays the homologous sequence from one of five selectable organisms -- chimpanzee, atlantic cod, honeybee, yeast or lactic acid bacterium. The difference in sound and light between the channels is the result of millions of years of accumulated mutations.

The gene that is playing is called the Translation Elongation Factor 1. Since it has a stable rate of mutations it's useful for inferring deep phylogenetic relationships.

###Hrvatski
