A private-by-design AI code editor. Onyx Code is built on the VS Code foundation and bundles a local inference engine plus a curated catalog of open models, so AI chat and inline autocomplete work fully offline by default. Your code never has to leave your machine.
Everything you expect from a modern editor is here: extensions, themes, keybindings, an integrated terminal, Git. The AI surfaces sit alongside them, with a chat sidebar that can read and edit your project, agent modes, codebase-aware retrieval, MCP tool support, and next-edit prediction. External backends (Ollama, LM Studio, and any OpenAI-compatible server) are supported as an opt-in swap when you want them.

Prefer Homebrew?
brew install --cask onyxcode-app/tap/onyx-codewinget install OnyxCodewinget is built into Windows 11 and recent Windows 10. If you do not have it, install App
Installer from the Microsoft Store. You can also download OnyxCode-win32-x64-winget.exe from
the latest release and run it
directly; it installs per-user and needs no administrator rights.
Download either package from the latest release:
# Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives
sudo dpkg -i OnyxCode-linux-x64.deb
# Any distribution
chmod +x OnyxCode-linux-x64.AppImage && ./OnyxCode-linux-x64.AppImageThe inference engine and the default embedding model are bundled, so there is nothing else to install.
On macOS and Windows, Onyx Code keeps itself up to date. New versions download and install in place, so you never have to fetch an installer by hand. On Linux the app tells you when a new version is available and links you here.

This is the release asset host for Onyx Code. It carries the signed installers the app downloads and nothing else. No application source code lives here.
The "Source code (zip)" and "(tar.gz)" entries under each release are generated automatically by GitHub for every tag. They contain only the contents of this repo, essentially this README, and not the Onyx Code application source. You can safely ignore them.
Download only the installers. Everything else is machinery for the built-in updater.
