relatedly, we might benefit from reserving loop_anchors as a term for un-paired positions of left & right sides of loops. Left & right could then be left_anchors and right_anchors, which might also be more easily readable than l_sites and r_sites

currently in FRiP() this is called lef_positions:

def FRiP(number_of_sites, lef_positions, boundary_positions):
