Notes

Curb Working Group

  • Brian kicked off the meeting by welcome everyone in attendance and provided a background on CDS
  • Michael went over announcements. Highlighting the successful OMF Summit at CoMotion and introduced new OMF staff to the working group. Aylene McCallum, Mitch Vars, and Em Burnett.

University of Washington Urban Freight Lab Presentation

  • Dr. Giacomo Dalla Chiara presented his research on Understanding Delivery Drivers’ Curb Behavior
  • Noted that there are three components of deliver. Drive – Park – Walk
  • In one of his studies, it was found that 80% of a drivers time was spent outside the vehicle during urban delivery routes
  • With walking being so high, more research has been conducted on the role of walking.
  • Research has been done on how curb availability affects total route time
    • If harder to find parking – walk time is very high
    • If more parking, driver will drive more
    • Proving curb availability increases driving and reduces walking.
  • The city must balance providing more curb space and discouraging too much driving
    • Questions
      • Jonathan LaChance - out of vehicle time, when does the clock start?
        • Clock starts when you park, in vehicle time, out of vehicle time
      • Elias – what is the average distance from warehouse to a city?
        • 15 miles away from urban centroid. Average distance between trips is less than a mile
      • Brian – this research seems to show a need for cargo bike delivery?
        • Highly dependent on cargo bikes. With cargo bikes, walking is 60%

Curb Objects

  • Michael provided level setting on the direction that the CDS WGSC would like to head in
  • Jacob Malleau presented on what he has been working on over the last month by showing the WG a screenshare of GitHub
  • Curb Objects are another element with the CURBS api
  • Curb Objects can be located anywhere but must relate to a curbs space or a curb zone
  • Geometry is listed as individual point now
    • We would like to know how others store this type of information
    • We would like to stick with one geometry type
    • Michael – we could add an optional field to define a polygon shape
    • Passport – from an admin standpoint, point is most efficient given the number of objects that could be present
  • Please review list of object types and state if anything should be added
    • The list is intended to be exhaustive but open to discussion
  • Michael – we should consider including external links for additional information. Such as plugshare or other public facing location. URL with more information to Object
  • Miranda – Policy would be assingned to EV charger as an object or assigned to a space where EVs would park next to an object?
    • Michael – policy attached to a zone
  • Leave comments in GitHub – what are your use cases for this
  • How objects relate to events – similar to zones and space relate to event
