Add a "clear all" icon to the left of search field

Really love and use the search box functionality to quickly find an app by name.

Would be really great to have two things added to that:

1. small "X" icon somewhere to the left that would clear the search box and show all apps back
2. (configurable) option to do the same automatically after an app is clicked and launched in a new tab

Does it have to be a visible UI element or is some key binding such as "Esc" would be sufficient?

Having both Esc and an icon would be great. If nothing visible, then maybe double click the search area or right click could clear it. Just an idea.
