When trying to run the fault-tolerance-example recently, I discovered that it would not deploy due to a NullPointerException. See #107

Expected Outcome

The example should deploy and operate as per the instructions.

Current Outcome

Following the example instructions and running the bundle jar, the following exception is observed and the application fails to deploy:
