Wikipedia and Wikidata curation

The wikidata page has a number of issues (marked with exclamation marks). It can probably be improved too.

I wonder if there should be somebody taking care of that. Maybe temporarily, while transition is taking place, or permanently.

I advice not to touch wikimedia projects with rename-related tweaks. We didn't even do Raku edits on our own main website, and people are already editing wikipedia page names and such regardless of what WP:COMMONNAME says.

Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used

Currently, “Perl 6” is the most common name for the Raku language.

Please focus on our own resources first.

Sorry for the inconvenience to wikipedia editors. I've already made sure that the path to raku document doesn't suggest tweaks to Wikipedia, but I can't stop random contributors from doing these changes. Arguably we could've explicitly said that people should not do any changes, but it seems that nobody reads that document anyway, so I don't think it would've helped much.

Just as an example of how wrong things are, somebody already put https://raku-lang.org/ as the official website. I know that we control https://raku.org, but I don't know if https://raku-lang.org/ is something that belongs to us. Either way, both websites are currently not official because both redirect to perl6.org, which is the official website at this current moment.

Generally the way to handle Wikipedia is that if you control something don't create or edit the article on it but maybe for minor details because you are a primary source. Rather those creating/editing Wikipedia articles should be third parties that don't control the subject and that can cite external sources for their changes.

So yes, focus on updating our official/external resources first. Wikipedia can follow later.

Which is precisely why someone should curate it. Curating means taking care of keeping it relevant, updated, and revert possible wrong things. In the wikidata entry, for instance, Raky is said to be inspired by META-II. I didn't know that existed, but it does not have a reference, which I can only assume means it's not true.

As a matter of fact, I'm not so much worried about Wikipedia than about Wikidata, which is increasingly becoming a set of statements on items that is being used all across applications and libraries. And the problem there is that lots of statements have been flagged, and almost none of them have a reference. Somebody taking care of it would help to keep it accurate, and also update it or improve it from time to time.

Just to be clear, the renaming thing is only tangential to the fact that wiki* need curation. It might need a bit more during renaming, since it will be convenient to update things on site as soon as possible (for instance, wikidata includes file extensions), but it's something that we would still need to do.

I repeat, please do not disturb these projects in good faith. Feel free to do fixes and provide citations where needed regarding any aspects of raku and rakudo, but try to avoid the renaming topic.

Edit: by “avoid” I mean refrain from mass renaming mentions of perl 6, leave it to those who know better.
