k8s built in auditing requires k8s v1.9 - which will hopefully appear mid 2018 to kube-aws?
kubernetes-retired/kube-aws#1076

there may be some way to run auditing on older kubernetes if we need it sooner - there's a refernce to 'legacy auditing' in the audit doc at https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/debug-application-cluster/audit/
